Leo Cauffield, a British journalist, vanished from his Beirut house in January 1963. Sally, his wife, was aware that he worked for British intelligence, but she was not prepared to hear that the British embassy suspected he had defected to Communist Russia. He is a former chief of MI6's counterespionage branch, and his wife's dogged pursuit for the truth takes her from London to New York, and then to Moscow to piece together the jigsaw puzzle of the past.
