Dr. Adrian Helmsley, who is a member of a worldwide geophysical team that is examining the effect on earth of radiation from exceptional solar storms, has discovered that the planet's core is heating up. He issues a warning to the President of the United States, Thomas Wilson, that the crust of the earth is becoming unstable and that the entire human race will perish if appropriate measures are not made to save even a portion of the population of the world. In the meantime, author Jackson Curtis discovers the same information by accident. While the leaders of the globe are scrambling to construct "arks" in order to survive the impending disaster, Curtis is doing his best to find a method to save his family. In the meantime, earthquakes and volcano eruptions of unparalleled strength are wreaking devastation in different parts of the planet.
